The Neuromath Network is a Research and Training Network funded by the EC that joins six european research teams expert at mathematical cognition. It aims at developping high level research on the relationship between "Mathematics and the brain". The overarching aim of the project is to coordinate different approaches to mathematical cognition, especially to our sense of number. For several years, the research teams have been pursuing distinct objectives and developing distinct expertises. New techniques have in the past two or three years been deployed for the first time in this area, most notably functional brain imaging and genetic analysis of developmental deficits.

The Network projects aim at (1) mapping the brain systems engaged by different numerical tasks, (2) determining the plasticity of the brain for numerical processes following damage, by assessing the extent to which intervention can help acalculic patients to recover function, (3) identifying the effects of language on neural organization of numerical knowledge, (4) determining the extent to which developmental numerical deficits are the consequence of deficits in other cognitive abilities, such as spatial working memory, and linguistic, and the extent to which they can be a primary deficit. We are concerned with identifying brain anormalities responsible, and, if possible, a genetic basis for these, and (5) devising neural network models of basic numerical abilities and more advanced calculation skills in ways that stimulate human performance both qualitatively and parametrically.

The research methods used in the Network are:
